CFA Society Toronto & CFA Society Ottawa Announce 2025 Winners of CFA Institute Research Challenge Local Round

(TORONTO, ON) February 13, 2025 CFA Society Toronto and CFA Society Ottawa are pleased to announce the student team from the University of Waterloo, School of Accounting & Finance as the 2025 winners of the annual CFA Institute Research Challenge local round, following the in-person competition held during the CFA Society Toronto Embrace the Challenge event on February 12, 2025.

“Thank you to CFA Society Toronto,” said Jai Betala on behalf of the team during the award presentation ceremony. “It has been great – the whole process has taught us a lot about the company, it was a unique challenge, and we loved every single moment of it. Thank you.”

As local round winners, the University of Waterloo team will now advance to the sub-regional stage of the CFA Institute Research Challenge, with hopes of progressing to the regional and ultimately the global finals.

This year, 12 Ontario university student teams participated in the Toronto-Ottawa local competition of the CFA Institute Annual Research Challenge. Student teams from George Brown College, School of Accounting & Finance, University of Guelph, Lang School of Business & Economics, University of Waterloo, School of Accounting & Finance, and York University, Schulich School of Business competed as finalists in the local final.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded, creating comprehensive equity research reports and presentations that include a buy, sell, or hold recommendation. This year’s local round subject company was BRP Inc. (TSX: DOO), a global leader in the world of powersports products, propulsion systems, and boats, built on over 80 years of ingenuity and intensive consumer focus.

There are six stages of the CFA Institute Research Challenge: preliminary, local, sub-regional, regional semifinals, regional finals, and global levels. At each stage, teams present and defend their analysis to panels of industry professionals, gaining invaluable experience from seasoned CFA charterholder experts.
