One of the Important Lessons

ONE OF THE IMPORTANT LESSONS of Greek philosophy is that change is the only constant in life. So much has changed in the months since January, when we began planning this special May issue of The Analyst, with its two weighty features: one on diversity and inclusion, and the other on ESG (environmental, social, and governance) investing. Job security, routine, and the very financial system that we’ve come to rely on have all been thrust into turmoil since then, and there is no way of knowing what the full impact will be when we come out on the other side of COVID-19.

Early in the New Year, when I began my role as editor of The Analyst, I never imagined that I’d be writing this letter on Day 13 of self-quarantine (and Day Nine of homeschooling my eight-year-old twins).

Despite the struggle we’re all facing head-on in one way or another, one message above all is ringing true: when we all focus and work hard toward a common goal, whether it’s our civic duty to protect our healthcare system and the most vulnerable within our community, or to fight for diversity, inclusion, or environmental and social improvements, we can make a huge impact.

I can’t help but take some inspiration from the iconic country music singer and trailblazer, Dolly Parton: “If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.”

In this special issue of The Analyst, we are fortunate enough to have thorough coverage from CFA Society Toronto events held earlier this winter, as well as engaging interviews with thoughtful leaders in diversity, inclusion and socially responsible investing.  Barbara Stewart, CFA, reflects on a decade of her Rich Thinking research, and in our charterholder profile, Lindsay Patrick, CFA, shares her perspective and expertise. Other contributors this issue have taken their own deep dives into academic and practitioner perspectives on ESG investing, and on diversity and inclusion.

Stay safe, stay well, and take care of each other.
