ONE OF THE FEW POSITIVES to have come out of the pandemic is that it has forced us to have difficult conversations and become more open when it comes to mental health. Unfortunately, these discussions are often dictated by necessity because so many people are struggling, rather than by preventative or proactive approaches. The hopeful prospect is that these conversations serve to destigmatize mental health, ensuring that more people get help and seek it out sooner.
The theme of diversity and inclusion in this issue of The Analyst highlights the essential role of mental health in the creation of a diverse and inclusive workplace. We provide in-depth coverage of an important CFA Society Toronto webinar held last fall, “Focusing on Mental Health: An Overdue Discussion for the Investment Community.”
We also take a deep dive into CFA Institute’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) standards by examining the methodology and processes used by CFA Institute in creating the new DEI Code. We explore the application of the Code’s core principles and reflect on what the future holds in terms of actionable resources to help build a more diverse and inclusive future within the financial industry.
In late 2021, CFA Society Toronto sent out a member poll to help us better create content that represents member sentiments. Because of demand to showcase more charterholder profiles, this issue features two charterholder profiles: Jason Parker, CFA, a fixed-income professional who strives to act as a vocal advocate of diversity and mental health within the investment industry, and Scott Savage, CFA, a Digital Advisor with Microsoft’s Customer Transformation and Innovation Team, who shares how pursuing his interests in both a military and civilian career has allowed him to access unique opportunities.
We also explore the rapid movement toward alternative investments, with this type of investing expanding beyond the ultra-wealthy as opportunities are becoming available to a broader spectrum of investors.
Finally, social media has provided us with a limitless platform with which to educate the masses, but has it really moved the dial in terms of financial literacy? Who are the “finfluencers” and are they really making a difference?
The spirit of this issue is a reflection of the cumulative difference people can make when they work together toward a shared goal, whether it’s diversity and inclusion, financial literacy, or simply being present to help a colleague, family member, or friend. Let’s keep listening, talking, and learning from each other.
