On 26 November 2014, CFA Society Toronto was thrilled to present the Second Annual Media Contact Directory Launch and Press Awards. The Press Awards identify and reward publications and journalists whose work helps consumers and those who serve consumers to gain a better understanding of the investment profession.
Competing publications submitted three articles from the past 12 months that they felt best demonstrated their commitment to investor education, ethics, and high professional standards.
This year there were three categories for the press awards: Publication of the Year, Journalist of the Year, and the spirit of the Future of Finance.
The spirit of the Future of Finance is a new award category launched this year in support of CFA Institute’s Future of Finance campaign, whose mission is to shape a trustworthy, forward-thinking financial industry that better serves society.
To support the importance of the campaign locally, the judges flagged one article that they felt best represented the spirit of the Future of Finance. Selected entries embodied characteristics of any of the following pillars of the Future of Finance campaign: Financial Knowledge (empowering investors to make better decisions), Putting Investors First, Retirement Security, Safeguarding the System, Regulation and Enforcement, and Transparency and Fairness. The publications and authors of these articles competed in a second round of scoring by another panel of judges to earn the award. The winner of this year’s spirit of the Future of Finance Award is Julie Cazzin, MoneySense, for her article, “The Family Profile Reunion”.
Finalists for the Publication of the Year were: Canadian Business magazine, The Globe and Mail, and MoneySense magazine – The Globe and Mail was named Publication of the Year.
Journalists who penned the top three scoring articles were added to the shortlist as finalists for the Journalist of the Year award. Finalists shortlisted for Journalist of the Year were: freelance journalist, Bryan Borzykowski, Rob Carrick of The Globe and Mail and winner, David Aston of MoneySense.
Congratulations to all who participated and for their hard work to make investor education both engaging and entertaining.
