From the Desk of the CEO

IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS  since I started volunteering for CFA Society Toronto—almost from the moment that I received my charter. And, ironically, my first assignment on the Board was as editor of the newsletter. From there, In the early 1990s, I moved into the role of Vice Chair, where I saw speakers bring live props—including a chainsaw and a “home-made” volcano—to the Society’s annual dinner to illustrate the economic backdrop of recession and on-going financial market volatility of the times. As I progressed on my CFA Society journey, through roles as Chair and Past Chair, I was proud of the quality of the professional development opportunities and kinship offered through our local CFA Society that extended into the much broader investment community.

Obviously, quite a lot has changed in the times since then, and what I treasure now are the personal and long-term professional relationships forged over the years, most of which remain intact today. Since I took on the leadership role of Chief Executive Officer at CFA Society Toronto in 2014, my focus has been about bringing our members together to learn and develop as professionals, raise standards in the industry, and to form partnerships with like-minded leaders in the local and global community.

We have grown together and now, with over ten thousand members, we represent the largest group of charterholders of the 150 Societies worldwide. Today, during the uncertain times created by COVID-19, we as Torontonians, Canadians, and members of the financial industry are facing unique and difficult challenges beyond anything we’ve ever faced in the markets, in our careers, and in our homes. We’ve been unable to host, in person, the educational and networking events for our members and guests that make up the essence of our Society. Even something as basic as a friendly, warm handshake is completely off the table—for now.

I continue to be impressed by our over 350 dedicated volunteers and experienced management office staff, and their ability to pivot and innovate in the face of challenge. Thanks to technology, perseverance, and nimble planning, our teams have come together to provide a variety of workable solutions. We are now delivering “virtual” educational opportunities, expanding our mentorship programs, and providing our members with regular communications in a determined effort to keep us all connected and moving forward together.

I look forward to a time, in the not too distant future, when we can all shake hands and break bread together again, in person. Let’s remain grateful and generous towards all our “front line” heroes that have made so many personal sacrifices and endured the brunt of this unprecedented challenge for all of us.

I wish you and your families health and wellness during this difficult time.
