Forecasts, ethics, regulatory reforms and career advice…

It’s the biggest event of the society’s calendar every year – the Annual Forecast dinner turned 53 this year and as you can see from the pictures, it’s still going strong. This year over 1,100 members and guests turned out to hear forecasts from Patricia Croft, chief economist at RBC (now retired), and Bob Doll, CFA, vice-chairman and chief equity strategist at BlackRock. Read the write up by Gerry Ramos, CFA for a full report – and see which 2009 attendee had the most correct forecast for 2010.

In this issue we also have two book reviews that touch on the ever current topic of ethics. Rossa O’Reilly, CFA reviews financial historian Niall Ferguson’s High Financier: The Lives and Time of Siegmund Warburg. Victoria Barclay, CFA has a review of No One Would Listen by Harry Markopolos, CFA. It’s a fascinating account of one individual’s five unsuccessful attempts to get the SEC to put a stop to Bernie Madoff’s $65-billion investment Ponzi scheme.

Anna Savelyeva has written a summary of some of the key points covered by former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, who spoke at the Canadian Economic Forum in October. Mr. Volcker is currently the chairman of President Obama’s economic recovery board. Pauline Lai, CFA has written a companion piece: a brief overview of the Dodd-Frank Act, which impacts all U.S. federal financial regulatory agencies and defines a new regulatory environment for derivatives.

For our newest members looking for career advice, executive search consultant Mark Toren provides tips on landing that first investment job that will get you on your preferred career path. Irene Goryn, CFA profiles the unique international career path of Rahul Khasgiwale, CFA, CAIA. Rahul is currently VP, Investment Director (North America), Multi-manager at HSBC Global Asset Management and came to Canada after successfully setting up the multi-manager business for HSBC Global Asset Management in the Middle East.

Wishing everyone a terrific 2011.
