Happy summer, everyone! Welcome to the June issue of The Analyst. While it is certainly not easy to be in an upbeat mood given the prevailing environment in the economy and the markets, summer is a great time to reflect, take stock, and perhaps, for some of us, even to make a new start.

It is no coincidence that we chose “career management in challenging times” as an overarching theme of this issue. Our first page outlines the fantastic resources and tools available to you, our members, through Toronto CFA Society, that many are still not familiar with. It also offers helpful tips on networking, and bits of wisdom from executive recruiter Tim Chisholm and career coach Jennifer Britton. Your society is here, with and for you.

Continuing on the career theme, the Spotlight On column, written by Shang Yen Bell, CFA, features coverage of the Professional Development Day organized by the society earlier this year; and the Committee Update is on our mentorship program, now it its second year–what a great service to members, especially at times like these.

As if to emphasize the point of standing strong no matter where career tides take you, the Member Profile column in this issue features Bill Ashby, CFA, president of Beutel, Goodman & Company, an industry “lifer.” He has been in it for over 35 years and spent about two-thirds of that time with his current firm. Captivated by investing since his teens, and having been in the industry through several difficult cycles, Bill asserts that he and his firm have never been tempted to do anything that was not consistent with their value philosophy and process.

In this light, it is particularly interesting to look at the career and philosophy of the legendary David Swensen, chief investment officer at Yale University. Our Member Communications committee member Anne Maggissano never ceases to amaze with her pertinent choices of industry luminaries to feature in our Great Minds in Finance column.

For those of you that might be facing the brunt of some clients’ reaction to the market turmoil, this issue’s Investment Theme offers guidance to advisors by Ellen Bessner, a litigation partner at Gowling Lafleur Henderson and a recognized author/speaker on the topic. The article was sourced by our committee’s Jane Gulian-Moiroux, CFA.

Last but not least, the Industry Development column details the very important discussion around the creation of a single Canadian securities regulator, relayed by Nino Boezio, CFA.
