WHEN THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR COLLEAGUES and peers are posted on social media, embracing a mantra that “comparison is the thief of joy” can be challenging. While these posts and accolades are highlight reels, and we objectively understand that when those in our industry are successful, so are we by association, it can still be hard to turn off our inner critics.

Last winter, my children began taking karate lessons, both new to the practice and surrounded by many older, stronger, and more experienced classmates. In the five months since, I have seen them focus their efforts on improvement and celebrate the successes of their individual practice and those of others.
