“Good branding should reflect the values and purpose of any organization, and strong visual identity is a crucial way to get that message across without reading a single word.”
For over two decades, The Analyst has reflected CFA Society Toronto membership by providing content for investment professionals, written primarily by CFA Society Toronto charterholder members. The magazine and the brand therein reflect the growth and evolution of CFA Society Toronto over the years. This latest redesign is no different.
When I was introduced to The Analyst team in mid-2000s, the Society was still called the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts. While we aligned with CFA Institute, each Society produced material somewhat independently, and branding wasn’t top of mind. The Analyst’s purpose has always been to provide relevant, timely, and accurate information concerning the financial community to benefit members.
Around the turn of the millennium, when the newsletter was first published, the Society executive recognized the importance of making a cognitive connection between the physical newsletter and the values of the Society itself. With over 5,500 members, leadership positioned the magazine as a vehicle to connect with members, expanding beyond traditional in-person programming and reaching a broader audience, particularly those members who may not be working in the downtown core. The value of member connectivity was represented in the pages of The Analyst, which showcased write-ups of society programming and charterholder profiles, all in one place.
In 2012, the Society was renamed CFA Society Toronto and adopted CFA Institute’s new branding guidelines. The guidelines provided an updated logo and colour palette, along with several methods to help us put the new look to use. Brand consistency between all CFA Societies was reflected in a united aesthetic, particularly among other extra-large societies in Global Financial Centres. In 2015, the first iteration of the digital version of The Analyst was made available online for members in the form of a PDF flipbook.
CFA Society Toronto was growing rapidly, reaching 9,000 members in 2016 and claimed the title of the second largest CFA Society worldwide. The Analyst followed suit, with the Member Communications Committee delivering more and more material, including robust educational content curated to meet the diverse needs of a growing membership. By the end of 2016,The Analyst was no longer a simple newsletter, but a full-fledged magazine, printed in full colour and running between 20 to 40 pages. In 2020, the public was granted access to The Analyst online through the On Demand section of CFA Society Toronto’s website, thus expanding the reach of the publication and the position of CFA Society Toronto members as thought leaders in the investment industry.
Earlier this year, CFA Institute underwent a branding refresh that you’ll see reflected in The Analyst. The logo’s signature pinwheel has been streamlined to one colour from three. Perhaps less obvious updates are font changes and the exclusive use of black or white text throughout. The absence of coloured or grey text is a subtle reinforcement of our mission to deliver clear and straightforward information. Photography will replace illustrations in the magazine, emphasizing the community that has been fundamental in bringing CFA Society Toronto from its roots to its current status as the largest CFA Society in the world.
Branding and CFA Society Toronto are on an evolving journey. The Analyst remains committed to serving its subscribers and reflecting our core purpose of empowering Society members to continually grow as leaders who forge the future of finance. We hope you’ll continue to enjoy it with us!
